09/08/10 Participatory Rapid Assessment in Kirkuk - Hurriya
In the frame of the Peace Building Program in Kirkuk & Baghdad, a PRA process has been launched to ensure better community participation and good governance. 30 young volunteers were trained in PRA and conflict before conducting door to door visits of households in the district to discuss problems and needs of the communities. The PRA allows community members to share opinions and be heard. As part of the PRA, religious dialogue was launched with visits organized to local mosques and churches, requesting them to support peace education.
09/08/10 Technical Assistance to Iraqi NGOs - updated
In the frame of the Peace Building Program in Kirkuk & Baghdad, to support peace building efforts conducted by INSAN, UNOPS launched an RFP to implement community peacebuilding programs in Hurriya and Benuk. The RFP was sent to 18 Iraqi organizations. INSAN was requested to provide technical assistance to NGOs to design adequate project proposals to be submitted to UNOPS. The assistance took the form of bi-weekly meetings implemented in Kirkuk and Baghdad gathering the NGOs. 5 projects were selected and funded by UNOPS. Implementation of projects will last 4 months and will be supervised by INSAN.
03/06/10 PB Program in Kirkuk & Baghdad: Peace Football Tournament
In the frame of the Peace Building Program in Kirkuk & Baghdad, focal points in Kirkuk and Baghdad have the task to design and organize awareness raising activities to spread peace values accroos their neighborhoods. In Baghdad, on June 3rd 2010, the peace football championship was launched which gathers 8 teams made of individuals originating from diverse communities living in Al Benuk in Baghdad. The tournament will see football games organized every day until June 13th.
Focus on current activities PB Program in Kirkuk and Baghdad As INSAN has built the capacity of 30 local NGOs
accross Iraq on diverse areas of NGO management and conflict management, they
are now preparing to conduct a national civic education campaign to contribute
to reconciliation in Iraq. NGOs are working in 9 groups and the campaign will be
implemented in Autumn 2010. In Baghdad and Kirkuk, community participation
processes have been launched with the conduction of participatory rapid
appraisals and further work with community leaders will allow community
development plans to be developed. Advocacy to local authorities will be
launched in order to press on the government to effectively contribute to local
development. -------------------- Conflict Sensitive Journalism Training As 20 journalists from Baghdad and Diyala were
trained in conflict sensitive journalism techniques at the end of May 2010, they
will be gathered again in August to discuss about contributions they can make to
the reconciliation processes in Iraq by launching change projects. ------------------- Awareness on violence against women in
rural areas of Kirkuk INSAN is continuing the conduction of awareness
sessions for women and girls on the topics of women's rights and violence
against women in particular remote areas around Kirkuk. 25 focal points in rural villages around Kirkuk have
been trained in violence against women and women's rights and will be important
points of contact in their village for women seeking support. ---------------------- Building Peace in Rapareen, Kirkuk Computer, hairdressing and electricity vocational
trainings are continuing in Rapareen. Young people are particularly enjoying english lessons
that are being offered in the centre. Social activities such as theatre and internet will
entertain young population during the period of Ramadhan.

The Case of Kirkuk
Kirkuk is an oil rich city located in Northern Iraq, traditionally populated by a mix of communities living peacefully side by side.
The status of the city of Kirkuk in Northern Iraq has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, gaps between communities are widening due to the political conflict.
INSAN has designed a strategy to mitigate conflct in the city of Kirkuk and to promote peaceful co-existence between communities in order to prevent a breakage of violence.
